[Abstract]
The development of gunpowder weapon and the changes in cavalry tactics in the 19th century
In this paper, the development of gunpowder weapon and the changes in cavalry tactics in the 19th century were investigated in the perspective of Korean martial arts history. The development of Honggyeongraeran(ûóÌØÕΦ¡Õ¯) in the early 19th century most clearly demonstrated the tactics of Chosun army which was in transition at that time.
Typically, the government riot army used gunpowder weapon as the core tactics to suppress the rebellion instead of using mounted troops for fast breakthrough. ¡ºYoonwonphilbi¡»(ëÔê¯ù±Ýá) compiled by Park, GyeongJong, 'Military Drill Commander' demonstrated the necessity of gunpowder weapon very clearly. Due to the changes in tactics, the duty of cavalry was limited to keeping the palace on night duty, and "Jeonma(îúØ©)" was transformed to "Bokma(ÜÔØ©)" transporting the cargo. Especially, due to the change in marine defense tactics including handover lines, the number of artillery increased and cavalry, instead, weakened significantly. Thus, the horseback martial arts training for the cavalry was limited to the army keeping the palace.
