본 논문은 한국 마상무예를 바탕으로 한 마상스포츠의 발전 가능성과 향후 과제에 대하여 집중적 살펴보고자 하였다. 먼저 한국 마상스포츠를 유형적으로 분류해 보았으며, 한국 마상(馬上) 스포츠의 역사적 기원을 중심으로 발전 가능성에 대하여 언급하였다. 대표적으로 말을 달리며 활을 쏘는 마상무예의 일종인 기사(騎射)와 서양의 폴로와 유사한 형태인 격구(擊毬)를 중심으로 해당 종목의 역사성과 발전 가능성 및 장비의 문제를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 특히 전통의 마상무예를 현대의 스포츠에 걸맞게 해당 장비의 개량화를 통해 보다 안전하게 보급할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 여기에는 마상스포츠 전용 안장을 기본으로 기사에 필요한 활과 화살 그리고 관련 장비들과 격구에 활용한 장비뿐만 아니라 역사성을 바탕으로 한 의상과 신발까지도 모두 포함하는 내용을 담고 있다. 또한 마상스포츠의 효과적인 정착을 위하여 관련한 장비 개발이나 초기 저변 확대를 위한 자원의 교육 등은 관련 산업으로의 발전을 위하여 가장 선도적으로 이뤄져야 할 사항임을 확인하였다.
This paper placed an emphasis on developmental potentiality and future tasks for horseback sports based on Korean cavalry martial arts. First of all, this thesis classified Korean horseback sports into several types and described advancement opportunities by focusing on historical origin of Korean horseback sports. Mainly horseback archery(騎射) and Kyokku(擊毬), which is very similar with present polo sports, are examined for each events’ historicity and advancement possibility. Especially, it is confirmed that traditional cavalry martial arts could be safely supplied by improving equipment suitable for use in modern sports. In addition to horseback sports only saddle, these equipment include not only the things necessary for horseback archery such as bows, arrows and other related equipment required for Kyokku but also historically based shoes and clothing. Furthermore, developing related equipment or planning education for resources to expand local needs is confirmed to be the most primary factor for effective settlement and progress of horseback sports.
