Acculturation of Hwan-do(ü»Óï) and Sword Martial arts
in ¡ºMuyedobotongji (ÙëçÝÓñÜÏ÷×ò¤)¡» during the Joseon Dynasty
Choi Hyeong-guk
(Director of Martial Arts, Suwon City Performance Company)
This study examines the tactical change to the ¡®Hwan-do¡¯ among the swords used
during the Joseon Dynasty and the related changes in sword martial arts. The
transformation of Hwando during the Joseon Dynasty was analyzed into five major
points. First, in the early days of the opening of the country, conflicts with northern
tribes intensified. At this time, the swords of the Jurchen tribe cavalrymen began to
be influenced by the slightly curved swords. Secondly, after the Imjin War, the length
of the swords used by the Korean army became significantly longer in order to
compete with Japanese swords. Thirdly, from the latter half of the reign of Injo(ìÒðÓ)
period, the total number of gunman in the central army increased rapidly, and the
length of the sword became shorter and shorter. Fourth, in order to prevent
personal weapons such as the bow and sword of Jeongjo(ïáðÓ) reign from being
excessively ritualized, the military martial arts training manual ¡ºMuyedobotongji¡» was
compiled and the basic standards for swords were organized. Fifth, the Korean
military sword underwent its greatest external change towards the end of the Joseon
period, when a new curved handle type sword, a Western military sword style,
influenced by Western military swords introduced via Western warships.
